What is the difference between physical and chemical sunscreens?

Physical sun protection (Mineral filter)
Sun protection acts as a screen that reflects and diffuses UV rays away from the skin’s surface. Examples of ingredients: Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide
Advantage:
- Safer to use because they are not absorbed into the bloodstream. Softer on the skin, and poses less risk of sensitivity or irritation.
- Provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays
- Provides immediate protection upon application
Disadvantage:
- Cannot be applied with a higher protection factor
- White/gray appearance
- Smears more difficult
Chemical sun protection
Organic sunscreens absorb UV radiation, deactivate it by turning it into heat and then release the heat from the skin. Examples of ingredients: Octocrylene, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane
Advantage:
- Spreads easier and does not look white/gray
- Provides broad-spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays
- Can be applied at higher protection factors
Disadvantage:
- You must wait about 20 minutes after application before the product activates or provides protection
- More likely to cause irritation
- Can be absorbed into the bloodstream
